Transom extensions or offsets are frequently used on hulls that were originally designed for sterndrive installations. The offset allows an outboard gearcase to be in the same postion as a sterndrive gearcase. This will allow the hull to get on plane quicker, maintain the hull on plane at lower speeds, and allows more of the hull to be out of the water while on plane, which will give you increased top end and fuel economy. Scarab Boats is one example that I can think of.
Offsets and jack plates are used on race boats for the same basic resaons, however each installation will be unique to that particular hull. I have a Summerford STV and use a jack plate with a 6" offset, this adds about 10-15 mph to my top end, and still allows the boat to be very stable in the water.
If the offset is original, it was designed that way, so you should have no problems. Most horror stories of brackets shearing off, lost engines, etc. are just that - stories.

The best advice I can give is that a boat is designed for a specific maximum HP motor, and the boat is designed to have an motor mounted in a specific spot. When you start "moving" the motor farther back and still have the same torque from from the motor, this will upset the geometry the boat was designed for. I had a friend who had extended his transom mount about 6" to make the boat faster. He was coming in from the lake rather quickly to beat a storm. He turned his boat sharply to get into the channel...he turned, the motor didn't! Ripped right off of the boat! The next day he started a search for the motor, and after 4 days of looking, nobody found it. If a professional shop does the extension work, you may be fine. Personally, I leave things the way they were designed. Good luck!

If your taking bracket that sets the engine 2+' off the back it good idea if installed correctly. makes for better planing and performance.Jack plates work for lifting the engine up higher when flats running.
