Boat capacity labels: What does the "Or" Mean?

This seems like a stupid question at first but trust me if you think about it this is not clear. In the real world of logic, if you say "Or" it means that one or the other applies. If you have a checking account with Jane or Bob with signing priviledge, then only one or the other has to sign. If you have a checking account with Jane and Bob, they both have to sign. On my boat, it says Max capacity of 7 people "or" 1070 lbs. So if I have 3 adults and 5 small children, and am well under the weight limit (like 200 lbs), am I in compliance? It seems like the "or" indicates that you have to be in compliance with one or the other the way it is worded, or why would'nt they say "And" like used in conventional logic? Please help and if you can provide ANYTHING that confirms this such as a link to a legal reference that would be helpful.

Your example gives your own answer. That check can be signed by either Bob or Jane. You must have one or the other to get it signed, not both. With boat capacities it's either 1070 max pounds or seven people, not both. You can have either a max of seven butts in seven seating positions, but no more than a half-ton of people. It's a little more subtle with the boat because you're dealing with the MAX weight factor and the check example doesn't that that same issue.

7 people is still the maximum capacity for that boat. The Body capacity is refering to the available seats to that the boat is still stable. when there is more than 7 people, even when your under the weight limit, the boat can become unstable and if you turn to sharply or hit a wave wrong you could potentally filp the boat.

Just remember, you can only hav 7 people safly in your boat. if you get to your weight limit with 5 people, no more people. Even if the max body capacity is 7, 5 reaches your weight limit, so that day , 5 is your max capacity.

You can't put more than 7 people in the boat. It really applies to people who are overweight. Meaning that if you have 3 400lb guys, you are over the limit. Use common sense, and there should be no problem. Good luck.

Just don't exceed that 1070 lbs.

You don't want "and."

Don't add the people and gear together, if you are heavy on gear you lose people and vice versa.
