I left boating when the biggest outboard you could buy was a Mercury 100 hp in-line six. It was a 2-stroke.

I see boats on trailers that have outboards that look like they could hold the original Chysler Hemi inside. What are the largest outboard motors you can buy now?

I'm talking about standard motors for recreational boats, not racing engines or somebody's back-yard special.

Are they all 4-stokes now, for environmental reasons?

as of today, the Mercury Verado 275 is the largest four stroke, and the Yamaha 300 is the largest two stroke. Yamaha's release date to the public for the 350 four stroke is in July, and I have had the opportunity to run a boat with the prototypes. amazing engine. Watch for Mercury to retaliate this fall or next spring with a 400hp four stroke, as they have already tested the 275 Verado with increased boost pressure and it lived fine with well over 400hp. I have a friend that has been working with Evinrude on re-introducing the V-8 two stroke in an E-tec package, which will also produce over 375hp. Amazing the new technology.

Yamaha is bringing out a new V-8 350 horse 4 stroke monster! Check out this page.

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/events/dynamicevent/2/713/yamaha_launches_first_v8_53-liter_four-stroke_outboard_.aspx $ strke is much cleaner then 2 stroke but Evinrude has a 2 stroke called E-Tec that they say is clean.

I remember Bay constible's using 22' "Whaler's" with 300 H.P. V-8's. they used radar "arches" to re-inforce the transome, they stopped using the V-8's a few years ago, as the hull was over powered, and "Insuring them" became an Issue.
