Is there a diesel outboard engine for boats in the USA? Looking for around 35HP-60HP. Any ideas?

I am looking for a diesel outboard engine for a 16' runabout. I have heard many good things about diesel over gas, and want to know where I can find them in the USA.

Absolutely right ZinaRae (now there's two of us). I believe that I've also seen a Yamaha outboard diesel... seems to me it was about 20 hp. One thought tho, diesel engines can be quite heavy. You have a 16 ft runabout and may find it a bit heavy in the back. The only other consideration you might want to check into is to see if it's an electric start. I'm not certain but because of the extreme compression that diesel needs, I don't believe that you could realistically pull start one. Other than these things I believe you will find diesel an extremely reliable way to go. I have an inboard yanmar that I've owned for 10 years and it's been an absolutely flawless performer.

fuel stabilizer is a good idea, just make sure you run it through the the carbs otherwise it does little good in keeping your engine running smoothly. i used a 13 gal. kitchen trash can full of water to run my little 6hp motor in... i cut a hole in the bottom side of the trash can and plugged it with a boat plug ( for draining after use ). you should run the engine at varied rpms... ( it's not specific ) to engage all running parts. I would do this at least every 30 days and it does hurt, if you think about it, to give the bulb a couple of good squeezes once a week or so to keep fresh fuel moving.

This is a prime example of bad info (except for one person) that you will encounter in Yahoo Answers. Read below. We own one and it's great engine for our purposes.

Nope. If you want a fuel efficient engine, that is the most powerful I go with the Evinrude E-tec.
It also produces less pollution than any other outboard engine.

There aren't any diesel outboards current available in the Retail US market. From time to time, various ones have been offered, but they were not succeessful, being smelly, noisy, expensive and very, very heavy.
