Containers were designed to allow for easy transition in Intermodal Transportation.

Example: A manufacturer in the middle of Japan loads his products into a container. A truck then tows that container to a rail station where it is then towed by the train's locomotive to a rail station close to shore where it is again towed by a truck to the seaport. At the seaport steveadores load it onto a containership which sails it to Long Beach California where steveadores offload the container from the ship and onto another truck which tows it to another rail station. The locomotive then tows the container to a rail station in Kansas where it is then towed by yet another truck and towed to a wholesaler. The contents of the container are then distributed to retail outlets and eventually some farmboy in Kansas gets his SONY computer.

Containers are almost all standardized. THey usually come in TEU (Twenty Equivelent Units) or FEU (Forty Equivelent Units) sizes. This denotes how long the container is. Both TEU and FEU containers are 8 feet wide and 8.5 feet high. There are also special containers such as high cubes which are 9.5 feet high and half cubes which are 4.25 feet high. Containers can contain reefer elements or be just a frame around a cylindrical liquid tank as well.

These are large metal boxes which hold goods for shipping.

Typically these are loaded on land, shipped to the port by truck, and then loaded on a large container ship for transport overseas.

In the latest issue of Outside Magazine there is an article on a large container ship that got caught in a storm and lost containers overboard.

A shipping container is a large rectangular metal box made to an international standard size, or half or quarter of the full size, used for sending goods on a ship, usually specially made to transport the containers to international destinations worldwide.
