The question comes up regularly & with lots of good personal experience information in the forums of sites like http://www.sailnet.com/forums/ and http://www.cruisersforum.com/ and https://activecaptain.com/index.php and http://sailfar.net/forum/index.php and cruisersnet

etc. etc. .

A little easy Google searching for "live-aboard marina" will also point you in the right direction to start & modify your research. The lower cost thing is very do-able ( for values of lower cost I.E. $300 - month ) water/facilitys/etc. with not so moderate electrical usage included ( hooray for AIR CONDITIONING!! and ho-hum for oil filled heaters figure billing around 13 to 20 cents per KWH in much of the S/E USA at the dock

) based on a 30' slip. A place that is reportedly under new management & cleaned up with improved facilities from just a little while ago but still lower cost as a single example of the type in a moderate winter area, still no "dock service" from the hotel restaurant as far as I've heard though :(

http://www.bridgepointe.com/MARINA/tabid/60/Default.aspx If N.C. is still too northerly in winter weather try the west coast of FL. esp. between Tampa and the Pensacola area for price. I have a personal prejudice against the states of GA. & TX. but many are happy there & reporting moderate costs. The west coast tends to be pricier from most reports.

You are going to generally wind up pretty far up-river or in areas with other characteristics some consider un-desirable to get significantly below that $ mark at that size, but the lokul c-store is gunna genrerilly have both Thunerbird AND Nitetrain in stiock! an u cun watch & hear the 'tainmebt az Betty jo & her newest fist fight fridays.

not cheap is correct. Pen hire is not cheap. Add in the walk of several hundred yards each time you want to go to the toilet, the cost of the boat, the annual haulout & antifoul & the lack of space aboard, usually not that close to cheap shopping (all yachties are rich you know).

Plenty of Marinas but you will not find any that are cheap!

this question seems to be for anywhere except UK, where all

local authorities seem to discourage such a lifestyle
